Winter blues
I find that the change in seasons has a profound effect on my physical and mental well-being. Winter is a particularly challenging time for me.
Top tips
Try to get as much natural daylight as possible, particularly first thing in the morning, before 11 o’clock. 30 minutes if you can, but I find even 10-15 minutes makes a big difference. If that is difficult then you can purchase therapy lights; I have got some light glasses that I like because you don't have to sit in one place to use them.
Try to get up Early and go to bed at a reasonable time. Keeping a routine bedtime and waking time can help to reset your Circadian rhythm.
Get out in nature; Spending time in Green space/Blue space can have really positive effects on your health and well-being. I find this helps me a great deal generally, but when the weather is good enough to get out.
Check vitamin D levels, take a supplement, ask your GP for blood test to check your levels, they can then prescribe you the right dose of vitamin D. Hold the sunscreen in winter, allow your skin to absorb vitamin D naturally from the Sun.
Try energising and refreshing scents and essential oils, like Orange, Lemon and Bergamot, particularly in the morning. Or more seasonal/comforting scents like White Fir (Christmas tree), Cedarwood, Frankincense, Clove, Cinnamon and Lavender. Essential oil blends like Dotterra’s Console (it’s like a hug in a bottle) or Peace (does what it says on the tin!)
Cosy up! “Hygge” as the Norwegians say. It's about soaking up all the good things Autumn and Winter have to offer; think: blankets, slippers, light a candle or dim the lighting, hot drinks, hot water bottles, bracing winter walks, hot soup and roast dinners.
